Reading for Information in 7th Grade with the Common Core

Considering the shift in focus on informational reading that the Common Core requires, and the current event articles that are used in many of our classes- specifically about the upcoming election and, of course, the sadness revolving around Sandy's destruction here on the east coast - there's sure to be lots of teachable moments in our classrooms in the upcoming days.  Our students need to have plenty of opportunities to work on developing the necessary skills to be successful with this type of reading.

For help in guiding students through close readings of informational text, I have created the following:

RI.7 - Reading for Information at the 7th Grade level has now been broken down into student-friendly "I can..." statements. In addition, I've defined key terms for each standard in the strand AND included a Reading Response for Nonfiction printable for each standard (except RI.7.10).

To be used with nonfiction books or shorter, informational texts, I hope that this resource is one that you will find to be helpful!  Be sure to also stop by Middle School Matters Blog to find other ideas and lots of freebies to use with your middle school students.
