Let's Talk Turkey!

common core writing

Don't you just love this time of year?  I love the leaves changing and falling and the temperatures dropping.  As long as it isn't too cold!
I also love hearing about students and their traditions and how they celebrate Thankgiving.  You know...what they eat, where they celebrate, big or small gathering, etc...

And I love to get my students writing and reading!  What's better then than to combine the two!

I wanted to take some open ended writing activities, reading activities and have some Thanksgiving fun!  We are really trying to keep track of what we read: literature or informational text and knowing the difference.  A really cute display that lets students celebrate what they read and requires them to know the difference in what they read is Gobble, Gobble Up A Good Book.  Can't you just see a whole wall of these cuties??

I enjoy hearing students' perspective on how things should be done.  Have you ever asked a student how a turkey is cooked for Thanksgiving?  They can write the cutest of explanations for this!  It makes for a fun writing activity and requires them to use their imaginations!  This activity fits right in during Writer's Workshop and turns out adorable!

Common core is requiring students to justify their opinions in their writing.  They can have a good time doing this when taking on the perspective of how a turkey might feel on Thanksgiving!  Eat More __________ Not Turkey gives them this opportunity to form an opinion and then justify their reasoning.

After filling out this pre-writing sheet, students work through the rough draft, editing and revising before publishing a final copy.  Students will get to use those arguing skills for a good cause with this one!
These are not the only items included in this packet.  Students will also work on increasing their fluency by practicing Thanksgiving poems, write an acrostic Thanksgiving poem about what the holiday means to them, and can fill out a Turkeys...are...can...have graphic organizer.  Lots of holiday fun with the common core!!

Drop by and say hello sometime!
