Common Core Standards 1.L.1, 2.L.1, and 3.L.1 are all about demonstrating command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking
I find the best way for children to show command of the conventions of language is to get them talking! Of course, they do need the instruction, but once they've had that instruction, they need to use the language. They need to practice talking!
I use a lot of games in my classroom to get the children using the language. I find it's a comfortable setting, and the right game will get the kids using the language the way you want them to use it.
Here's an example of a game my students love, so they'll play it over and over. All they have to do is match the past and present tense on the footballs. Since the verbs themselves are all football related verbs, all my little football fans will tell about the time they saw the quarterback get sacked, and the time their favorite team scored. Once they use the past and present verbs effectively, then they can write stories using these same verbs. There's your evidence that they have mastered past and present verbs, part of the CCSS 1.L.1, 2.L.1, and 3.L.1! Click the image or click HERE to find the Football Past and Present Verbs game.
